From Farm to Midnight Oil

Midnight Oil, which was originally known as Farm started out in 1972. Its founding members were Jim Moginie, Andrew James and Ron Hirst; Peter Garrett joined the band later. Farm originally played covers of Led Zeppelin, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Cream. At the time a part-time band since Garrett was studying, Farm became Midnight Oil in 1976. The name of the band was inspirated from a Jimi Hendrix song “Burning of the Midnight Lamp”.

Midnight Oil and Powderworks

Once the band changed its name to Midnight Oil, it delved into a more aggressive punk-hard rock genre. By this time Martin Rotsey and Gary Morris had also joined the band. Morris played an instrumental role in the band’s success as he smartly negotiated favorable contracts with record companies and tour promoters. In addition, Morris also played an important role in the band establishing its own record label, Powderworks. In 1978, Midnight Oil released their debut eponymous studio album under their own record label.

Midnight Oil (1978)

The album had seven tracks and made it into the Top 50 Australian Kent Music Report Albums Chart. AllMusic gave the album 3 stars and Rolling Stone described it as ‘a reasonably accurate showcase for the talents of the band, and as such it emphasizes all the strengths and weaknesses

Head Injuries

Head Injuries became the band’s second studio album which was released in 1979. It was definitely an improvement from their debut album as AllMusic gave this album four and half stars. It was also certified Platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).

Place without a Postcard

Midnight Oil’s third album Place without a Postcard reached No.12 on the Kent Music Report albums charts. The album was released in 1981 and certified double Platinum by ARIA. It included eleven tracks, out of which “Armistice Day” and “Don’t Wanna be the One” were chartbusters.


Over the next two decades after the release of Place without a Postcard saw astronomical growth in the popularity of the band. The albums released during this period (with the exception of the last album) were all certified Gold, Platinum or multi-Platinum by ARIA.

Multi-Platinum Albums

Midnight Oil’s later studio albums were certified multi-platinum ay ARIA. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Red Sails in the Sunset, Diesel and Dust, and Blue Sky Mining were all critical and commercial successes. Diesel and Dust was certified 7 times Platinum by ARIA and Platinum in the US.

Released in 1987, Diesel and Dust was the band’s sixth studio album. A concept album, Diesel and Dust revolved around the struggles of Australia’s indigenous people and environmental causes. The album impressed everyone with Rolling Stone ranking it at No.13 on its list of the 100 best albums of the 1980s. Years later in 2010, Diesel and Dust was listed at the top of 100 Best Australian Albums, a book compiled by three Australian music journalists.

Midnight Oil Today

Midnight Oil has been inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Also, they have won eleven ARIA Awards making them one of the most successful Australian musical bands ever.
