Rodeo, aggressive and competitive in nature, is a sport involving riders and their skills with cows, horses, and other livestock. It is rather an entertainment event linked with the sport. Rodeos are large-scale events and include exciting events such as bareback riding, bull riding, team roping, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, and barrel racing. The events are divided into two basic categories: the rough stock events and the timed events. Other events like breakaway roping, pole bending or goat tying may also be a part of some rodeos, depending on the authorizing organization and region.
The sport of rodeo initially emerged from the working practices of cattle herding in Spanish and Mexican lands. Soon, it made its way to the United States of America, South America, Canada, and Australia. Even the term ‘rodeo’ is draw from a Spanish word ‘rodear’, which originally meant roundup, and refers to surround.
From the vaqueros to the American cowboys; Wild West Shows to the modern sport, the rodeo history is full of fascinating characters and a multi-cultural blend of customs and practices. Developing directly from a working industry, today, this unique modern sport has continued to grow from its roots as a working ranch competition to a huge national sport. It is no longer a sport only for the ones who live on ranches and have a rural lifestyle, as it rodeos are now open to all who have a competitive spirit and love of thrill.
Rodeo is mainly popular within the Canadian province of Alberta and throughout the western United States in the current times, and is the official state sport of Wyoming and Texas. However, it is quite popular in North America as well, where professional rodeos are governed and sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA). There are also associations for the Native Americans as well as for other minority groups. Rodeo has not only developed in associations at regional and state levels, but also has also established itself at the high school and college level. A good example for this is the association for younger children, called the National Little Britches Rodeo Association.
To name a few leading rodeos would include National Finals Rodeo (Las Vegas, Nevada); Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (Houston, Texas); Frontier Days (Cheyenne, Wyoming); National Western (Denver, Colorado) and Calgary Exhibition and Stampede (Calgary, Alberta).
The typical season for competitive rodeo starts in spring and runs through fall; whereas the traditional peak for the largest number of rodeos to be held is the weekend of 4th of July. Currently, the modern professional rodeo event runs longer, concluding in December with the PRCA National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in Las Vegas, Nevada.
