Music has always been a very important and elaborate part of human life. Every era and age had their own form of music and the history of instruments and rhythms goes back thousands of years. Tribes in the old ages would use instruments made out of animal skin and bones to celebrate their ceremonies and drums and war songs have been a part of warfare for as long as human history can recall. As time passed, music has evolved into many forms and we have had eras of classical music, blues, country, rock and even pop. If we were to label the current era for its music form, we would no doubt call this the era of Rap and Hip Hop.
What started out as a cultural movement in the 1970’s by the Jamaican and African immigrants that resided in the United States has now become a worldwide phenomenon and hip hop artists have now become some of the most recognized and loved musicians in the world. Back in the 1970’s enterprising musicians like Afrika Bambaata and DJ Cool Herc started a movement that went way beyond music. The movement was a whole lifestyle. It started out as hip hop music. The music would feature DJ’s sampling audio parts from various songs and mixing them together or putting them in a loop with added effects like scratching and reversing. This type of music was very popular at parties in its originating New York Bronx area. Along with the culture came a new type of laid back dressing sense, style of talking and graffiti art. These are all part of the culture and are what make hip hop what it is today. The style and attitudes of these early purveyors of the hip hop culture was so attractive to people that the adoption of this culture expanded from people with African or Jamaican heritage and moved throughout the world where people would be a part of the culture, no matter what color or race they belong to or what language they speak.
As the hip hop music scene developed, another act that goes back to the Jamaican roasting tradition and African poetry was incorporated into the culture. Rapping was the act when MC’s or DJ’s would start talking over the music and it then evolved into them speaking rhythmic poetry. The content of these rap songs started out being serious and political with a lot of talk about the struggles and hopes of the people of the time and has now evolved into multiple styles including boasting and even love songs.
Rap and Hip Hop is now an important part of the music industry and no one can deny that the impact this form of music and its performers have had on the world music scene is immense. With legends in the rap scene such as Jay-Z, Nas and Eminem that have garnered the interest and attention of the younger audiences as well as the respect of the seasoned hip hop fan, the rap music industry has nowhere to go but up.
