With the first concert performed in 1885, Henry Lee Higginson, the founder of Boston Pops Orchestra had a wish to present a lighter music to the public. Presenting a combination of the current tunes of musical theatre, a light classical number and a streak of sporadic music, the orchestra was somewhat similar to the present day Boston Pops performances. Boston Pops did not adopt its own official presenter until Fiedler completed his fifty year tenure as Pops conductor. The Orchestra gained fame far and beyond Boston under his leadership but Fiedler wished more than just a classical music. According to him it was restricted to the prosperous people of the society. Thus he amalgamated the flavor of pop music in collaboration with the classical music thus presenting a different genre in the field of orchestra. Besides many distinguished number presented so far, Pop ’s most appreciable work includes The Typewriter, a vibrant composition by Leroy Anderson.   With an outrageous sales reaching over $50 million under Fiedler’s direction, Boston Pops became a commercial hit and surpassed others. The first recordings were made in 1935 with its conversion to stereophonic sound later. In order to commemorate the Independence Day celebrations, Fiedler began the tradition of organizing Fourth of July Pops concert that accompanied the fireworks display thus rating it to be the much appreciated and over-crowded gathering with respect to Independence Day celebrations. With an approximate crowd of 200,000 to 500,000 people attending the celebrations, Fiedler’s idea became an instant hit.   Some world class solo performers and legendary artists performed on Boston Pops tours that were organized from 50’s till 70’s all across the country in many cities. Fiedler’s death in 1979 succeeded John Williams as the conductor of Boston Pops . Famous film composer John Williams kept the tradition and thus keeping in mind the motive of introducing the classical music to the wider public, initiated the idea of conducting concerts annually, titled "Pop-on-the Heights". Some of the scores were also used in the much acclaimed films like Indiana Jones and Star Wars.   In 1995, the post for principal conductor felt vacant which was filled by Keith Lockhart. Even today Lockhart adds his touch of vibrancy and hue to his dramatic performances. Although Williams is still the key conductor of Boston Pops, he conducts most of the concerts through out the year himself. Aimee Mann, Ben Folds, Guster and Elvis Costello are some of the pop-music acts who were gathered around by Lockhart to perform with the orchestra.   In order to bring out the best singers of the nation and to promote new talent, Boston Pops has organized a talent competition nationwide with the title "POPSearch". The amateur singers get the opportunity to perform with the orchestra on Fourth of July Extravaganza and also on national tours. This gives encouragement to the singers as they are applauded with the cash also. This competition gained immense popularity and could be considered none less than a well- known American Idol.   Thus an orchestra that began its journey with a vision to promote classical music, won hearts of many and is today, the heart throb of the nation undoubtedly.
