Played in more than 60 countries worldwide, with millions of fans spread all around the globe, Cricket is one of the most popular sports of the present day. The heart throbbing, adrenaline pumping action is not over until the last bowl has been bowled. That is precisely what keeps fans pinned to their seats till the very end. The legendry rivalries between some of the most exciting cricket teams make the sport all the more fun. Every year, tons of matches bring out the best in both the players and fans alike as they come out to celebrate the gentleman’s sport in its true spirit. Cricket has definitely contributed to some of the most unforgettable moments in sports history.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is the governing body of the game. There are a total of 104 member countries of the ICC right now. That speaks volumes about the ever increasing popularity of the sports. Unfortunately, the sport has not been made a part of the Summer Olympics since 1900. The reason was and still is the fact that a single game of Test Cricket can take up to five days to finish, that is more than the time of all other Olympic games. But ever since, the game has continued to evolve and has introduced much shorter versions of game in the form of One Day International (ODIs) and T20s which has rejuvenated the game in the true sense of the world.
The most prestigious cricket event is the ICC Cricket World Cup that is held after every 4 years. Interestingly enough, England has not been able to win a single World Cup title and that is the country whose national sport is cricket. The first World Cup tournament was held in 1975. West Indies won this privileged trophy along with the one that followed. India was the second country to win World Cup held in 1983. When Pakistan and India were the combined hosts of 1987 World Cup, fans saw the emergence of another cricket giant in the form of Australia, as the years that followed proved.
1992 World Cup victory favored Pakistan which resulted in another subcontinent hosted world cup of 1996. By this time, cricket was a whole new ball game. Colored uniforms increased the charm of the game. This time, luck favored Sri Lanka as they emerged as the 1996 World Champs by beating Australia in the finals. The years that followed saw an Australian monopoly as it wreak havocs on their opponents in every variation of the game which continues to date.
With a little bit of innovation and technology, cricket has again successfully held the attention of its fans which were bored by the much slower version, Test Cricket, of the game. T20 has taken it to a whole new level and now the fans see no reason to curb their enthusiasm so now they are all too excited to buy Cricket Tickets no matter what time of the year it is since the fun never stops.
