The “Ballo” from the Italian courts reach out for the audiences at large; the swirly tutus and the elegant Pointe of the dancers instigates the anticipation of what follows. The performers flow, sway, and leap with the fluidity to create a dream like fairy tale aura. The melodious symphonies supporting the elegant and decent dance moves transport you to the unknown utopian lands.
The grace of Ballet is nothing that words can describe it’s an experience that is felt through the heart. It’s the name of precision and articulation dealt with an artistic poise. The posture turns and flexibility team up to create the illusion that we covet to live again and again. The contrasting unison of upright posture and flawless flexibility is the highlight of this dance. The power of ballet is such that with the ‘en Pointe’ performers not only beautify the music but narrate different tales; the tales of love, death ,dreams, angels ,birds and legends.
This stylistic dance form has graced the courts of Italy, France, and Russia as an elegant dance mastery of fencing; the art of fighting with a sword. Since then Ballet has emerged as a highly technical dance requiring years to master it. It has evolved tremendously in the Russian arenas with companies like Bolshoi who are considered to be world best in Ballet. The maestro of Russian ballet Marius Petipa in collaboration with the great composer of all times Tchaikovsky has created many master pieces including The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake.
George Balanchine of Russia is considered to introduce this celebrated dance of Russia to the Americans. Balanchine along with his contemporary Igor Stravinsky strived to create dances that were not just illustrating music but more of an expression of music in terms dance. His version of Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Midsummer Night’s Dream and Square dance are still kept alive by many of his adherents. The contributions of Bellanchine marked the advent of neoclassical epoch in ballet. He played an effective role in bringing together the classical ballet with the contemporary trends of dance.
The Contemporary ballet has been a popular medium having a universal appeal. The Russian descent choreographer Mikhail Baryshnikov and American choreographer Twyla Tharp carried forward the Balanchine’s art. In today’s world many companies are devoted towards contemporary ballet including Alonzo King's Lines Ballet, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Nacho Duato's Compañia Nacional de Danza, The Forsythe Company and Nederlands Dans Theatre. Traditional groups like Kirov Ballet and Paris Opera Ballet also couldn’t ignore the contemporary dance and have incorporated it on a regular basis in their acts.
The contemporary ballet scene is pretty prolific with companies like Bolshoi theatre, Moscow Ballet, Kirov Ballet, National Ballet of Canada and Martha Graham Dance Company amongst many others. The Classics performance of the Balanchine’s choreography is also a regular feature of the ballet dancing.
