The Story
“The Hip Hop Nutcracker” is based on the classic ballet play envisioned by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The classical piece, in turn is based on a short-story penned by E.T.A Hoffman. The story was called “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” and picked up by Tchaikovsky’s collaborator, Marius Petipa. The original ballet performance is divided into two acts. It is a magical story of a family’s Christmas Eve becoming far more exciting than anyone had anticipated.
Clara’s family is having a Christmas Party and her uncle/magician/godfather brings her and her little brother a nutcracker as a Christmas gift. While no one else pays any attention to it, Clara does. Unfortunately, her brother Fritz breaks it. She is heartbroken by this, but when everyone falls asleep, she goes into the living room to have another look at it. To her surprise, numerous mice have collected near the Christmas tree and are worshipping the nutcracker which glows bright golden. The Christmas tree and nutcracker become life-sized, and Clara is catapulted into a fairyland for an adventure of a lifetime.
The hip hop version follows a similar storyline as well. However, the setting is altered from the 1890’s Russia to 1980s Brooklyn. The energy of break-dance takes over the poise of ballet, while retaining its fluidity. It is interesting to note that Tchaikovsky’s music has not been tampered with. Instead, the dances have been tailored to this classical music. It truly is a rare visual treat, and one every theater, dance, music and hip hop enthusiast should witness. If you are one of these, then book your The Hip Hop Nutcracker tickets now.
The Production
“The Hip Hop Nutcracker” is a reimagining of Tchaikovsky’s beloved musical ballet as a break-dance performance. It combines the two art forms and strikes an interesting balance. In order to do so, the
New York hip hop dance collective, Decadencetheatre has been employed and choreographed to perfection by Jennifer Weber. They bring a powerful and blatant physicality to the story, which makes it a completely different peace from the original.
There is also a strong sense of feminine power, as the collective is an all-female group. Plus, Jennifer Weber is the director as well as the choreographer of this play. Therefore, a strong social presence can be seen on this play, as debates on gender equity grow.
Nevertheless, it is not as though “The Hip Hop Nutcracker” is trying to prove some point; it is all-inclusive with Mike Fitelson being given the responsibility to pen this particular version of the play. He, ofcourse, inferred from the works of Tchaikovsky and Petipa; and Hoffman himself. However, freshness is brought to it through the creative liberty of situating the story in Brooklyn during the 1980s.

“The Hip Hop Nutcracker” is a travelling play. It is headed to a number of destinations, starting with New Jersey’s NJPAC.
