Circus Oz has clocked over three decades of providing entertainment to the world in the backdrop of its wonderfully magnanimous humanitarian agendas. The circus is filled to the brim with daredevil stunt artists, humorists with a wacky sense of humor, high-flying acrobats, and a background of authentic live music. But what really stands out is the philosophy of making it a progressive contemporary circus by incorporating rock n roll, satire, & popular theater. Started in December 1977 in Melbourne by the union of Australian Performing Group’s road-show Soapbox Circus with Adelaide’s New Circus, Circus Oz’s trailblazing work has excited followers worldwide. The Australian group’s livewire performances are making sure Circus tickets sales are healthy for their upcoming shows.
The emphasis on adding a new contemporary flavor to the conventional circus routines is a major plus of Circus Oz. It does not use any animals, trained or wild; with seamless teamwork being the mantra as only 11 to 13 performers showcase their skills over the course of a two hour show. An original backing band adds a new dimension, while unbelievable feats of balancing, strength, agility, & daring are shown. The circus is awash with references to popular culture (like Charlie Chaplin & Annie-based characters). The offbeat flippant humor is particularly appealing to augment the visual magic created especially by the hula-hoop artists & pole-climbers.
Tim Coldwell & Mark Finch are the directors of the circus. Coldwell was a founding member of New Circus, the forerunner of Circus Oz that he also helped found. He also had earlier experience with Ashton’s Circus (as tent hand & elephant boy) and Circus Royale (as clown & ringmaster), & has been an integral member for the show’s entire length. Mike Finch has been associated with Circus Oz since his interning in 1992. He became Artistic Director in 1997 after starting Circus Monoxide & featuring in the Banana Brothers busking trio. Circus Oz’s first performance came about in Melbourne in 1978.
The major boost the circus received came in 1979’s 32-week production in Melbourne’s Last Laugh Theater Restaurant. The circus party originally sewed their own tents & piled up a collection of caravans for touring. Tours to New Guinea & Europe represented Circus Oz’s first foray outside Australia. To date, the successful circus has performed in 26 countries to delight over two million fans with circus tickets. While igniting the fast-spreading physical theater troupe craze in the 80s, Circus Oz has received plaudits for its high-profile acrobatics training campaign with China’s Nanjing Acrobatic Troupe. Collaborations with The Flying Fruit Fly Circus were well-received too. Campaigning for social justice has been a strong undercurrent of their performances, with $250,000 raised over the years to support charities, refugees, & asylum seekers.
Circus Oz has amalgamated a socially conscious message with awe-inspiring feats of power and balance and a dash of that inimitable Australian wit. And the troupe has done it with a smile on its face, encouraging fans to grab their circus tickets for the upcoming shows.
