Eugene Ballet: A Little History

The Eugene Ballet was formed in 1978 as a result of the vision of Toni Pimble, a famous artistic director and resident choreographer of the company. Located in Eugene, Oregon, the company made its debut by performing the theatrical piece, L'Histoire du soldat (The Soldier's Tale) which starred the Pacific Players. A couple of years later, Eugene Ballet staged its first full length performance of Cinderella at the Sheldon High School Auditorium. This piece featured amazingly talented artists, Glenn White and Zina Bethune.

In 1982, The Hult Center opened to the public. During that same year, the company staged its production of the Bluebird Pas de Deux, Corsaire Pas de Deux and Firebird at the newly constructed venue. Since then, the Eugene Ballet has been a resident of The Hult Center for the Performing Arts. The company then slowly started to gain more popularity and soon went on its first international tour to Taiwan in 1987 where it performed in multiple cities including Taipei. The Eugene Ballet then collaborated with Ballet Oregon the following year and presented the romantic two-act ballet, Giselle both in Eugene at the Hult Performing Arts Center and in Portland at the Civic Theatre. This show starred Fernando Bujones and Kimberly Glasco.

Becoming a Premier Ballet Company

The Eugene Ballet continued to thrive throughout the ‘90s. In 1990, the company premiered Ken Kesey’s masterpiece, ‘Little Tricker the Squirrel meets Big Double the Bear’ which was narrated by Kesey himself. In 1992, the Eugene Ballet celebrated the Uncommon Woman Performance whereas in 1994, the company started a fourteen-year alliance with Ballet Idaho. Two years later, EBC received the Governors Arts Awards for Excellence in the Arts. After a year, the company toured Canada and staged Romeo and Juliet across British Columbia.

The Eugene Ballet maintained its popularity and enjoyed even more success in the new millennium. In 2006, the company collaborated with the Eugene Opera to present a thrilling performance of Hansel & Gretel. EBC also performed at the White Bird Modern Dance Series event at Portland’s Schnitzer Concert Hall alongside, the Pacific Northwest Ballet, the Oregon Ballet Theatre and the San Francisco Ballet. In 2017, EBC staged the premiere of The Snow Queen which was composed by Kenji Bunch.
