Laying the Foundations
The Royal Winnipeg Ballet traces its roots back to the year 1939 when the duo of Betty Farrally and Gweneth Lloyd laid its foundations and called it the "Winnipeg Ballet Club". Two years later it was renamed the "Winnipeg Ballet" and it kicked off its touring schedule across Canada for the first time in the year 1945. The Canadian Ballet Festival was held for the first time in 1948 thanks to the efforts made by the Winnipeg Ballet.
The organization was growing in stature and in 1953 it received the title of the royal by Queen Elizabeth II. The ballet celebrated that achievement by going on a tour of the United States in the year 1954. The year however was not without its lows. In June, the ballet's building caught fire and caused a lot of damage.
The Arrival of Arnold Spohr
The arrival of Arnold Spohr in 1958 as the Artistic Director of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet was a watershed moment for the company. He remained at the helm till 1988 and in those three decades changed the face of the organization. Spohr had joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in 1945 but as a dancer. When he took over as Artistic Director he remained focused on developing dancers from Canada.
Spohr was a visionary and apart from the development of Canadian talent, he also decided to take the company on international tours on a regular basis. He also actively contacted and engaged with dancers and choreographers from all around the globe to make the Royal Winnipeg Ballet a truly global force.
In the year 1962, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet began its General Division School which was headed by Jean McKenzie. Two years after that, the RWB began its scholarship program which was headed by Ted Patterson. The company then went on to win not one but two gold medals at the 1968 Paris International Dance Competition and in 1972; David Moroni was given the post of the principal of the Professional Division which was incepted recently.
Spohr's Departure
In the year 1987, Galina Yordanova staged the premiere of the Swan Lake in front of a jam-packed house. The performance also received widespread critical acclaim. Spohr left in 1988 and he was replaced by Henry Jurriens. Unfortunately, he passed away in a car accident in April of 1989.
John Meehan then took over in 1990 but had to leave the post in 1993 because of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's financial issues. William Whitener replaced him but he had to leave after two years as well.
André Lewis' Arrives
André Lewis then took over duties of the Artistic Director in the year 1996. He joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in the year 1975 as a performer all the way till 1990. He has turned RWB' fortunes around and currently holds the positions of the Artistic Director and the CEO of the company.
