Nutcracker is a melodious two Act ballet that is the creation of world renowned romantic era Russian composer Pytor Tchaikovsky. This genius musician was born in Votkinsk a small town in the Russian Empire in the year 1840. Tchaikovsky was born a musician and could read music and fluently play the piano at the tender age of seven. While in school and college he kept his connection with music by regularly attending operas and watching classical music theaters. In his teens he loved listening to the works of Verdi, Bellini, Mozart and Rossini. In 1861 he attended music classes and learned music theory in detail from Nikolai Zaremba. These classes were organized by RMS (Russian Musical Society).

Tchaikovsky was a prolific composer and was a part of  a five member group of renowned Russian composers commonly called The Five.  These five musicians include Tchaikovsky, Mily Balakirev, Cesar Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, Alexander Borodin and Nikolai Rimskykorsakov. Together these composers have made a sizeable contribution towards Russian romantic era music. Some famous works of Pytor Tchaikovsky are Valse-caprice in D Major (1868), Symphony No.1 in G Minor Winter Daydreams (1866), Symphony No. 2 in C Minor Little Russian 1872), Piano Concerto No. 1 and The Seasons. His world famous ballets are The Nutcrackers, Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty. 1812 Overture is a renowned overture of Tchaikovsky which he wrote in commemoration of Russian defending Moscow against the forces of Napoleon, he wrote this in 1812.

Nutcracker has been performed by famous production companies, in 1927 an abridged version was performed in Budapest, this was the first time Nutcracker was staged outside Russia. In the year 1934 Nicholas Sergeyev performed for the first time the complete version of Nutcracker in England. Famous director and choreographer staged another abridged ballet version of Nutcracker in New York City in 1940 but the first ever complete ballet performance in the US was done under direction of acclaimed ballet dancer and performed by the San Francisco Ballet in 1944. The Nutcracker was again performed in 1954 by the New York City Ballet. Some other famous performances of this tremendously popular show were done by performing artists like Yuri Grigorovich, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Peter Wright Rudolf Nureyev and more recently by Mathew Bourne, Mikhail Chemiakin and Mark Morris.
