It’s for the first time in Broadway history that the top creative spots have been filled by women. “Waitress” the much anticipated new musical has Sara Bareilles as its music director and lyricist, Jessie Nelson has penned the inspiring book, Diane Paulus is the director and Lorin Latarro is the choreographer. It’s an amazing moment for women all over and high hopes have been pinned on the musical that will start previews on March 25. The official premiere has been planned for April 24, following which an open-ended run will take place at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. Theatergoers are rushing for their Waitress tickets to watch the musical that is ready to make history with its all-female creative team.
More About The Musical & Its Talented Team
Inspired by the 2007 film of the same name, “Waitress” celebrates motherhood, friendship, love and the magic of a delicious pie. Jenna is an expert pie-maker and hopes to open her own bakery one day. But it’s not all that easy – she’s trapped in a loveless marriage with an abusive husband, lives in a small town, and just when she has gathered enough courage to leave him, she discovers she’s pregnant. Sucker-punched, she decides to have the baby but obviously it’s not something she wants. Things then take an adulterous turn when Jenna starts having an affair with her gynecologist, the charming Dr. Pomatter. The romance is more about self discovery than finding happiness with prince charming, and Jenna finally discovers her worth as a woman and mother.
Jessie Mueller truly shines as Jenna as she brings out both vulnerability and strength in her performance. She has already proven her worth on stage by winning multiple awards for her role of Carole King in the musical “Beautiful, The Carole King Musical”. Mueller elevates the show with her luminous singing and brings weary gravity to the character. Sara Bareilles’s songs beautifully explore the feelings of the lead characters. The Grammy nominated singer of “Love Song” and “Brave” fame connected with the character Jenna and rises as a natural writer for theatre. As a pop star she’s used to writing from a character’s perspective and tells stories in her songs. A clever lyricist, she channeled all of that into the characters in “Waitress”.
Director Diane Paulus leads the sisterhood of the creative team and her clever touches have made it an easygoing and fluid production. Paulus has a knack for transformation as she turned “Pippin” into a hit and made “Finding Neverland” an unusual musical. A perfect recipe with all the right ingredients, “Waitress” will definitely find fame as a comfort food stage adaptation.
