The Nutcracker: A Short History
In 1892, the original Nutcracker was performed for the very first time at Saint Petersburg’s Imperial Mariinsky Theatre. The two-act ballet was choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov while Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote the accompanying score. Today, it ranks as one of the greatest pieces of work in the history of performing arts.
That 20-minute-long suite by Tchaikovsky took the world by storm and its popularity far exceeded the complete production. It is also one of the late Russian’s best-ever compositions. The use of the celesta, an idiophone that is played with a keyboard, is the defining feature of Tchaikovsky’s score.

Plot

Having fallen asleep after a party in her house, Clara has a dream (some say it isn’t a dream) in which she finds herself travelling through a magical world that brings all the toys to life. Among them is her cherished Nutcracker that had been broken by a friend during the party.
Clara is quite happy to see the Nutcracker in this form but the evil Mouse King is out to get him. After his efforts to eliminate the Nutcracker are repulsed by Clara, the Mouse King comes after her with the Nutcracker, now turned into a Prince, standing in the way.
