The Magic of the Night Before Christmas

The Nutcracker is the classic holiday tale which captures all of the joy and excitement of the night before Christmas. Young Clara receives a mysterious gift which she can’t wait to open. As she unwraps the gift, she finds a nutcracker doll inside.

The Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre

Based in the Strip District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre traces its origins back to the early 1960’s.

During that period, a choreographer from Yugoslavia, Nicolas Petrov, started putting on numerous small ballets in the Pittsburgh area. One of the most notable productions he put on was the Nutcracker which featured 85 students from the Pittsburgh Playhouse. By 1970, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre made its stage debut at the Pittsburgh Playhouse. Its inaugural subscription season in 1970-71 was completely sold out and featured Petrov’s Swan Lake and the Nutcracker.

In its first few years, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre brought in some of the most prolific performers of that era to perform in their productions. This included the likes of Violette Verdy, Natalia Makarova, and Edward Villella.

Expanding the Company’s Reach

As the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre entered into its second decade, the company was considered one of the leading ballet companies in the entire country. The company also made its debut in New York City in its 1981-82 season. This was followed by an extensive tour across the country, Canada, as well as the Virgin Islands.

The Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Today

Today, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre is one of the five largest performing arts companies/organizations within Pittsburgh. The company features 30 full time dancers who have come from across the country as well as six different countries.

The company has also created a Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School which focuses on training the next generation of professional dancers. Students come from across the country as well as from around the world in order to receive the world class instruction that the company offers.

There is also the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Orchestra which is currently conducted by Maestro Charles Barker.

This is a company dedicated to its craft. Every year, the company puts on more than 50 performances, both at home and on tour.
