Located in the Bay Area of San Francisco, the ballet company is located at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, previously known as the Novellus Theatre. The company kicks off its regular season each year during spring time, usually inaugurating in the month of April and presents shows that constitute of performances by its twelve highly talented dancers. The dancers that complete the team include David Harvey, Ashley Jackson, Caroline Rocher, Meredith Webster, Keelan Whitmore, Ricardo Zayas, Michael Montgomery, Courtney Henry, Kara Wilkes, Zachary Tang, Yujin Kim and Paul Knobloch. The company was founded by Alonzo King, one of the most reputable and respected choreographers in America. King has worked with the Swedish Royal Ballet, the Ballet Bejart, the Frankfurt Ballet, Alvin Alley, the Hong Kong Ballet, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, North Carolina Dance Theatre, the Joffery Ballet and Hubbard St. Some of his most popular collaborative works include the "People of the Forest" that came forward in 2001 and "Long River High Sky" choreographed in 2007. In these acts, King was seen working with African Republics Baka artists and China’s Shaolin Monks, respectively. King has also joined forces with Danny Glover, Zakir Hussain, Hamza al Din and Pawel Szymanski during his regular season performances. Due to his contribution towards the contemporary arts, Alonzo King has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. This award was given by the Corps de Ballet at their International Teacher Conference.
Over the years, Alonzo has been the recipient of several prestigious honors and awards making him not only one of the best choreographers but also one of the highly respected artists. Some of these honors include the Mayor’s Art Awards presented by Mayor Gavin Newsom of San Francisco in 2008, Jacob’s Pillow Creativity Award given to him in the same year, the US Artists Award that he received in 2006, Best Choreographer Award given by New York’s Bessie Awards in 2005, Los Angeles Lehman Award, the Hero Award presented by Union Bank and Community Leadership Award presented by the San Francisco Foundation.
