Based in Houston, Texas, the Houston Ballet is counted among the top five professional ballet companies of the US, and is run by Houston Ballet Foundation. Over the years, it has established a reputation as some of the best professional ballet companies, receiving significant critical acclaim with the New York Times quoting it to be among the nation’s best. It comprises of fifty-one dancers and hosts seventy-five performances annually. Currently, the ballet performs at the Center for Dance, while it tours regularly within the US, across Canada and Europe. It is known to continuously add new works to its repertoire, only recently adding pieces by Nicole Fonte and Stanton Welch, Giselle by Kirov-trained artist Ai-Gul Gaisina, and Drink to Me With Only Thine Eyes by Mark Morris. The origins of Houston Ballet lie in Houston Ballet Academy that was founded in 1955 by Tatiana Semenova who had been dancing with the Ballet Russes. The foundation soon decided to establish a professional ballet company in 1969, led by director Nina Popova who had also been a former dancer with Ballet Russes alongside American Ballet Theatre. Between 1976 and 2003, dancer Ben Stevenson, who had been performing for the Royal Ballet and English Ballet in Britain, serving as the Ballet’s artistic director. Under him, it was seen transforming from having mere regional recognition to gaining international prominence. Then 1989, the company was joined by Kenneth MacMillan as the new artistic associate who worked with till 1992. Soon enough, Christopher Bruce was appointed as the new resident choreographer, who holds the same title till this day and has set nine works with the Ballet, including four pieces that were created specifically for it. McIntyre is also one of the choreographers to have created as many as seven world premiers for it, which includes his first complete length production of Peter Pan.
Currently, the Ballet’s artistic staff includes Ermanno Florio as music director, Stanton Welch as artistic director, Louise Lester as Principal ballet master, Steven Woodqate as ballet master, Ben Stevenson as Artistic director emeritus, Shelly Power as academy director and Claudio Munoz as ballet master, among other staff.
At present, the Houston Ballet is being led under the artistic directorship of Aussie choreographer Stanton Welch who was appointed in 2003, and has created many new pieces since. He is kwnontop have received choreography commissions from several international companies such as the Australian Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, BalletMet, Atlanta Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Moscoe Dance Theatre and Birmingham Royal Ballet. In 1995, the Ballet gained recognition as the first complete American ballet company to be invited the then Chinese government for touring the country. It has been estimated that five hundred million people watched the opening night staging of Romeo and Juliet when it was telecast in Chinese TV live. In 2011, the Ballet purchased another new work by Jorma Elo after winning the world renowned Rudolf Nureyev Prize in the category of New Dance. Currently, the Ballet’s administrative headquarters are based in the Center for Dance in Downtown Houston, which had a big opening in April 2011.
