New York City Ballet Tickets

Date & Time

The dancing queens going about their elaborate routines have now transcended popular culture to become a trademark of New York City. Tourists have flocked to the two home sites of the New York City Ballet, Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater & Saratoga Springs’ Saratoga Performing Arts Center, to capture what has become one of the signature attractions of the Big Apple.Popular traditional dances have been intermixed with innovative new dance festivals celebrating culture and stirring compositions, all held in the regal setting of the David H. Koch Theater. New York City Ballet tickets are for all theater enthusiasts who admire the subtlety of every move in the delicate art.

Ballet dancing had often suffered neglect, shunned by many as not being a major draw for its complexity & the inability to get many classy trainers under one roof. That is exactly what the New York City Ballet has achieved since its 1948 formation by George Balanchine & Lincoln Kirstein: a self-sustaining institution of excellence.

The New York City Ballet performs various ballets in complicated routines. With freshly trained pupils coming in from the adjacent School of American Ballet, there is renewed vigor in every act. The two-act ballet, The Nutcracker, composed by Pyotir Tschaikovsky, is a signature performance. The "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy", featuring the use of the celesta, has been a huge success. The New York City Ballet has also performed ballet adaptations of Romeo & Juliet & Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Apart from these popular representations, the New York City Ballet is renowned for the innovation in its ranks as it celebrates various choreographers. In 1960 & 1968, the Salute to Italy feature celebrated pieces like Monumentum pro Gesualdo and Donizetti Variations. In 1972, the Stravinsky Festival was started to honor the memory of his great friend & legendary composer Igor Stravinsky. Likewise, the Tschaikovsky & Ravel Festivals were held to honor two contemporary greats of composing. In 1982, the Stravinsky Centennial Celebration featured 25 ballet sequences played out to perfection to the composer’s music. The 20-year celebration of the New York State Theater was also held, as well as the American Music Festival that honored Balanchine after he had passed away in 1983. He was succeeded by Peter Martins in the capacity of balletmaster.

The New York City Ballet has its origins in earlier dance troupes. The American Ballet Caravan, formed by Balanchine, Kirstein & Edward Warburg, was the direct forerunner, having itself appeared out of a merger between the School of American Ballet, the American Ballet, and the Ballet Caravan. The American Ballet Caravan started performances in 1941 at the Metropolitan Opera House, but limited performances hampered its growth. The Ballet Society was formed in 1946, & it was a direct forerunner. It became resident at City Center of Music & Drama in 1948, eventually leading to its relocation as the remodeled New York City Ballet to the designed as ordered New York State Theater. 1948 was the year when the first premier for the ballet took place.

The New York City Ballet repertory contains over 400 smash hit ballets. They are divided over Spring, Winter & Fall seasons. The ballets have included hits like the signature Nutcracker. Quite often the work of one composer is displayed in one evening, as recently witnessed in the 2010 Fall repertory. New York City Ballet is also America’s first ballet to have two permanent venue engagements: one at the David H. Koch Theater (renamed after the investor pledged to invest millions in 2008) on 63rd Street in the Lincoln Center, & the other at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs. The adjacent School of American Ballet is revered the world over for its contribution to nurturing the art-form. Kids from the age of 6 start training at the institution which was opened in 1934, & was recently awarded the National Medal of Arts. Audiences have been thrilled by the wonderful acoustics & arrangements at the theater, & have been left spellbound by the synchronous moves of the artists.

Ballet as an art-form requires an appreciation of finesse & beauty, something that New York City Ballet ticket holders are adept at. It is certainly not for every eye to acknowledge the well-practiced rhythms of the expert performers. The luxury of watching the world’s undisputed best dancers in their finest moment can only be afforded by the purchase of New York City Ballet tickets.
