George Balanchine The Prodigious Ballet Master In 1948, the New York City Ballet was born with performances of Balanchine's Concerto Barocco, Symphony in C and Orpheus. Balanchine served as Ballet Master of the New York City Ballet from the inception of the company until his death in 1983.
