Immaculate, awesome, and scintillating are just a few words to describe this comic ballet. This ballet has been ruling the hearts of fans not only in the US, but also in other countries. The main idea is inspired by two macabre stories by E.T.A. Hoffman, namely Die Puppe (The Doll) and Der Sandman (The Sandman). This is one of the most performed ballets at the Opera Garnier. Fans of Coppelia find it something unique, and if you haven’t watched it, then you have certainly missed out. So get your Coppelia tickets only from us for an enjoyable evening!
Coppelia premiered in 1870 at the Théâtre Impérial de l'Opéra, primarily a comic ballet with choreography by Arthur Saint-Léon and music composed by Léo Delibes. This three-act ballet tells the story of a diabolical and mysterious doctor Coppelius who has a lifelike human-sized doll to which a village swain, Frantz, becomes infatuated. As the ballet is comic, it is often referred to as the lighter side of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein's darker side.
The story of Coppelia is set in a peasant village, and if Giselle is a tragedy, then Coppelia is a comedy set in the same background. The story also seems to be inspired by the travelling shows that used to take place in the 18th and 19th centuries, starring automatons and mechanicals. This type of unusual entertainment has not been very popular in the modern era and is somewhat under-documented, but a current survey of this field is contained in Tom Standage's film The Mechanical Turk, released in 2002.
There is a slightly alternate version of the opera by Jacques Offenbach called The Tales of Hoffmann, which is also a fictional work inspired by the story of Hoffmann that evolved into the Coppelia story. Tales of Hoffmann is an equally amazing opera, telling three fantastic tales with an epilogue in which Hoffmann is a participant himself. In the first story, Hoffmann falls madly in love with Olympia, a mechanical doll, but the situation ends bitterly when the doll is broken.
In 1974, renowned choreographer George Balanchine revived Coppelia with the help of expert dancer Alexandra Danilova. It was staged in New York for the New York City Ballet, with Danilova staging the Petipa Act 11 choreography and Balanchine creating new choreography for the mazurka, Frantz’s variation in Act 1, and the czardas. Helgi Tomasson danced the role of Frantz, Shaun O’Brian portrayed Doctor Coppelius, and Patricia McBride danced the role of Swanilda.
Coppelia is a wonderful ballet with a comic tint that keeps the audience glued to their seats. Its immaculate choreography, perfect timing, and melodious music leave them in awe when it ends.
