The Rite of Spring Tickets
The Rite of Spring is one of the prominent ballets along with music, by singer, painter and pianist Igor Stravinsky. It was choreographed by the notable Vaslav Nijinsky who was considered one of the early 20th century’s best dancers. The credit for the concept, costumes and set design all go to the renowned and multi-talented public figure, Nicholas Roerich. Sergie Diaghilev, the famous art critic from Russia produced this ballet for his ballet company called Ballets Russes. The Rite of Spring had its premiere in the summer of the year 1913 in Paris. The Rite of Spring Cities
The first part of the performance called Adoration of the Earth shows that as the curtain is raised, there are separate groups of young women and men appearing. The set is such that it looks primitive and conquered by evil natural powers. At first instance, dances are quite soft, slow and light-hearted. Slowly though, the dances become aggressive and the steps of the performers turn into very ferocious movements. The young men then take custody of the young women and carry them off the stage. A fight erupts at this point whereby peace is only made when an old man full of wisdom, intervenes. This is followed by astounded silence. A man then flings himself on the floor in worship. He then rises again and thereafter, a more frantic dance begins. Part one ends here with The Rite of Spring tickets offering extraordinary entertainment.
The second part of the performance is called The Sacrifice which begins in such a way that young women are all standing on stage near a roaring fire. One of the women has to be picked out to be sacrificed to mother earth. The one who is chosen stands in the middle appearing quiet, silent and static after a spiritual dance. All the young followers of the clan gather around the chosen young women and dance in a crescendo and ruthless excitement. At last the chosen girl joins the rest of the group which is followed by more intense and fierce dancing until it finally climaxes. At this point the chosen girl totally drains out, falls and perishes. The men of the clan carry her to the holy stone and fall into prostration. The rite comes to an end.
It is a well-known fact that Stravinsky's ballet The Rite of Spring presented many new concepts and ideas in the art of music, story and dance. Before this point, the audience was familiar with a ballet that was beautiful, charming and very elegant. However Stravinsky's style, although captivating was the complete opposite of what people were used to. It can be considered correct that this piece of work was actually a revolution in the history of dance and ballet.
Today, the style similar to that of Stravinsky's work has become regular practice for many ballet firms, with extensive use of music just like in Disney’s masterpiece Fantasia. Moreover, Star Wars’ composer John Williams is also known to be inspired by Stravinsky's work.
