Set in 1905s Russia, the musical Fiddler on the Roof is primarily based on Sholem Aleichem's book Tevye and his Daughters. Joseph Stein wrote the book for the musical, while Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock wrote the lyrics and music, respectively. The main plot revolves around a father named Tevye and his five daughters. The musical depicts Tevye's struggles to keep his family's religious values and traditions intact, as they are being highly influenced by new traditions of that time. Tevye is portrayed fighting a battle against the will of his three elder daughters, as well as the law of his village which enforces Jews to leave the village. Although set in a specific setting, Fiddler on the Roof tells a universal tale of generation gap and family ties.
To date, the musical has maintained a significant place in the minds and hearts of theatergoers. It premiered on Broadway Productions at the Imperial Theatre in 1964, and was later transferred to Majestic Theatre and then to The Broadway Theatre, where it ran for a record 3,242 performances. The original production starred Zero Mostel, Maria Karnilova, Beatrice Arthur, and many others. Jerome Robbins choreographed and directed the whole production. It was so highly acclaimed and commercially successful that it produced an estimated profit of approximately $1,574 on each dollar spent.
Due to the overwhelming response of audiences, the producers decided to stage it in different regions. The musical opened at London's West End at Her Majesty's Theatre on February 16, 1967. After the closure of the original West End Productions, several revivals of the musical emerged in the UK and England.
Fiddler on the Roof earned the critical acclaim it deserved, winning nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Direction, and Best Score. The success of the original production was soon followed by four revivals of the musical and a film adaptation in 1971.
The captivating plot and production value of the musical is sure to grip the audience's attention until the curtain call.
