NATIONAL FINALS RODEO – A BRIEF INSIGHT
The National Finals Rodeo is arguably the biggest rodeo event in the world today. Fans from across the nation buy tickets to witness all the fun and excitement live. This annual event is put on by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). Over the years, this annual event has gained immense popularity and viewership, and is now occasionally referred to as the World Series of Rodeo or the Super Bowl of Rodeo. This annual event is held in December in the city famous for its nightlife, Las Vegas. Held at the Thomas & Mack Center, an on-campus venue for basketball at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the sport attracts a huge number of fans annually.A LITTLE HISTORY
The NFR event is huge, and its popularity knows no bounds. The history of NFR traces its roots back to 1958, when the PRCA was established. The first ever NFR event was held in Dallas, Texas, right after the inception of PRCA. The NFR has shifted several times, starting from Texas, then to Los Angeles, then to Oklahoma City, and finally in 1985, the place chosen for the much-awaited NFR was Las Vegas.
THE FORMAT
Participants of the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) compete in seven neck-and-neck competitions. For each event, a winner is crowned. The eighth winner is the person taking part in more than one event, who must win these events in order to be awarded the title of overall championship. Therefore, there are a total of eight champions bestowed with the crown to mark their achievements.
The cowboy earning the highest number of victories is given the much sought-after title, "World All-Around Rodeo Champion Cowboy." The seven NFR events include tie-down roping, bareback riding, team roping, barrel racing, steer wrestling, bull riding, and saddle bronc riding.National Finals Rodeo – Fun Facts
The special dirt that is used for the event is stored once it is over so that it can be used next year.
The prize money for the event this year will be $10 million.
The animals at the NFR will consume around a whopping 60 tons of grain.
It is estimated that the NFR makes an economic impact of around $90 million over its ten day duration.
There will be estimated around 700 animals at the National Finals Rodeo.
