All the different varsity sports teams are under the direction of Joe Castiglione, their current athletic director.
Time Warner's sports magazine, Sports Illustrated, ranked the University of Oklahoma No. 3 for being the best college sports program in America. In 2009, the UO received the John Wooden Award due to the basketball player Blake Griffin and won the Heisman Trophy, credited to the football player Sam Bradford. This made Oklahoma the first school to have the top winners in both football and basketball in the same year.
The University of Oklahoma has been among the chartered members of the Southwest Athletic Conference (SWC) since its creation in 1914. However, five years later, Oklahoma joined the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association, leaving the SWC. This conference was divided in 1928, and the University of Oklahoma remained aligned with the teams that eventually created the Big Six Conference. More schools were added to the conference over the next three decades, and several name changes were experienced. Finally, in 1996, the Big 12 Conference was chosen as the name for the conference and it remains the same to this day.
The sports for which the Sooners are most popular are football, baseball, men's basketball and gymnastics, women's basketball and rowing, and wrestling. The Sooners also share famous rivalries with the University of Nebraska, the University of Texas, and Oklahoma State University. The Sooners enjoy a strong sense of tradition, history, and championships. Their teams have won numerous championships and have contributed greatly to the sense of pride not only in the Oklahoma community, but also across the nation. The best thing to enjoy during the Sooners’ matches with the teams from these universities is the spirit with which the Sooners fans sing the fight song - "Boomer Sooner." It has indeed become one of the greatest Sooners traditions. Ever since the formation of the Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma Sooners tickets have been in great demand.
