The Charlotte baseball team was bought by George Shinn in 1987 and he brought many changes with him. One of the changes was renaming the team through a voting contest. Hence the team was named the Charlotte Knights. The team moved to a newly constructed stadium in South Carolina, the Knights Stadium, in 1990. The Minor League Baseball organization awarded the Knights a Triple-A expansion franchise and they became members of the International League in 1993. In their first season in the new league, the Charlotte Knights won the Governors' Cup Championship.

Up until 2013, the Knights were using the Knights Stadium as their home field. In 2014 the knights moved to the newly constructed BB&T Ballpark in the uptown area of Charlotte. The newer stadium is not only more easily accessible but also has a slightly higher capacity. In the end it turned out that Homer had created a new world record for hugging the most number of people in an hour by a mascot. He hugged 5,615 people in the span of twenty four hours, receiving praise for his charitable efforts.
