Miami Dolphins – A Little History
The Miami Dolphins started playing as an AFL franchise in 1965 and have the distinction of being the oldest professional team in the state of Florida. They played as members of the AFL till 1969 but failed to make it to the postseason in any of the four seasons. As part of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the Dolphins joined the AFC East and qualified for the playoffs in their first ever campaign.
The best, however, was yet to come.
Back-to-Back Super Bowl Triumphs
In 1971, the Miami Dolphins clinched their first division title and conference championship. They lost to the Dallas Cowboys in the Super Bowl though. In the very next campaign, the franchise lifted the division and conference titles once again. In the Super Bowl, they came up against the Washington Redskins. The Dolphins won the game 14-7 to lift their maiden Vince Lombardi Trophy. They made it back-to-back Super Bowl wins in 1973 by trouncing the Minnesota Vikings 24-7.
The Miami Dolphins Championship Haul
The Miami Dolphins have not won the Super Bowl since then but have won plenty of other accolades. Their title haul reads:
Super Bowl – 2.
Conference Championships – 5.
Division Championships – 13.
Miami Dolphins Rivals
The Miami Dolphins’ three fiercest rivals are the Buffalo Bills, the New England Patriots, and the New York Jets.
Buffalo Bills
The Dolphins met the Bills on the football field for the first time on September 18, 1966. The Bills came out on top 24-58. The Dolphins won twenty games on the bounce against the Bills during the 1970s and that run basically began this rivalry. On top of that, two of the best QBs of that time Jim Kelly (Bills) and Don Marino (Dolphins) were playing for these two sides.
New England Patriots
The animosity between the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots began in the 1960s. During the early days it was the team from Miami that was in the ascendency during the games between these two famous sides. Recently it has been the turn of the Patriots to dominate. Their rivalry reached new heights in the 2008 season when the Dolphins clinched the AFC East championship. That triumph made the Dolphins the only side in the division to win the crown apart from the Patriots going all the way back to the 2003 campaign.
New York Jets
The Dolphins and the Jets were members of the American Football League and joined the AFL only half a dozen seasons apart. Then when the AFL merged with the NFL, these two sides were made members of the AFC East and the animosity between them has just grown with every season.
