The South Carolina Gamecocks follow Ted Turner to play sports without killing. Their unique name is a tribute to the great American Revolutionary War hero, Thomas Sumter. Thomas Sumter and his regiment were famous for their fierce game skills, strength, and fighting tactics. His great fighting skills won him the title of "Gamecock," and this very name is the recognition of the best varsity teams of South Carolina.
Some of the major sports that the South Carolina Gamecocks play are soccer, football, tennis, baseball, volleyball, and track and field. Previously, the Gamecock men were known as the Fighting Gamecocks, whereas the females were known as the Lady Gamecocks, but recent feminist movements in the sports world made them abandon the use of such terms. Besides this, there was also an objection to the use of their name that they were promoting blood sports.
Their official mascot is a gamecock named "Cocky," their official song is "The Fighting Cocks" and "Lead the Way," and their official colors are black and garnet. Sometimes, the honor and prestige of the Gamecocks is also celebrated with a tinge of golden color in certain official souvenirs. The black and garnet colors gained official status when the family of Dr. J. William Flinn flagged the football grounds of the championship in November 1895. The Gamecocks have great loyalties of fans, which is why the effort to change the official colors in the 1900s failed.
All the Gamecocks participate in the Division I level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the South Eastern Conference, which are the highest levels of intercollegiate sports. However, the men's soccer team does not play in the South Eastern Conference due to lack of funds and sponsorships. Therefore, the male Gamecocks play soccer in the USA Conference. The football club of the Gamecocks plays in the 20th largest college football stadium in America, William Brice Stadium in the South Carolina Fair Grounds. It is very common to find a stadium full of standing fans in the arena, despite a capacity of 88,000 seats. The Gamecock fans have nicknamed the home ground stadium of the Gamecocks as "Cockpit."
The worst rivals of the South Carolina Gamecocks are the Clemson University and University of North Carolina sports teams. Not only these; the Gamecocks have developed nail-biting rivalries with other members of the Southeastern Division. A very famous rivalry was developed against the University of Tennessee during a football game which is still commemorated with the name of "the Halloween Game". A recent rivalry was seen when the Gamecocks hired the football coach Steve Spurrier from the University of Florida.
The athletic club of the South Carolina University generates its own private funds. This tradition of generating personal funds started in 1939 with the initiation of the "Buck a Month" Club, where the players used to pitch in money to promote athletics. Their current athletics director is Eric Hyman. Curtis Frye has been coaching the track and field Gamecocks for the last 12 years. The softball games of the Gamecocks are played at Beckham Stadium and the volleyball games are played at the Volleyball Competition Center. The University of South Carolina does not sponsor the volleyball game for men; their head coach is Ben Samera.
The South Carolina Gamecocks have won a number of titles, championships, and league games. Some of the championships they have won include National Championships in Women's Equestrian in 2005 and 2007, a National Baseball Championship in 2010, and Women's National Hunt Seat Championships in 2005 and 2007. The Women's Tennis Gamecocks have won 323 games so far, while the Men's Tennis Gamecocks have won 825 games. In addition to winning championships, the Gamecocks have produced great Olympic medalists and world champions. Olympic athletes Aleen Bailey and Tonique Williams-Darling were part of the Gamecocks' track and field team.
The South Carolina Gamecocks are the torchbearers of college athletics in the region. Their fans have always been supportive, through good times and bad. Now, as the Gamecocks are ready to roll with a new spirit and winning ambition, make sure to catch them live by booking South Carolina Gamecocks tickets well in advance!
