The Second Coming
From the 1980’s onwards, Phish’s internal politics soon became public knowledge. It eventually led to the band breaking up in the early 2000’s and its members went ahead to work on their solo projects. In 2009, however, they met up again and charted out a feasible schedule for possible future shows. Since then, the band has been performing no more than fifty shows a year, leaving time for their personal lives and individual projects as well. This recipe has proven a success and, eight years down the road, Phish has embarked on an all new American tour.
The Baker’s Dozen Tour
The Baker’s Dozen Tour is a milestone in Phish’s legacy because it involves the band’s performing of over fifty shows at the prestigious Madison Square Garden. Only a select few acts have held this record previously, such as The Grateful Dead, Billy Joel and Elton John. Phish’s tour is made up of a number of residencies, which other than New York, are extended to Chicago, Pittsburg and other trademark venues. The Baker’s Dozen Tour is a follow up to the band’s 13th studio album, “Big Boat”. However, the set list is not limited to the tracks on this album and integrates some of their biggest hits within the show as well.
New Music
Phish has kept busy this year. Simultaneous to an extensive tour, Phish is also recording new music in Nashville. Their shows so far contain a noticeable number of cover songs which, according to lead guitarist and vocalist Trey Anastasio, may change on the next tour. Although the band has recorded many new songs, Ansatasio has stated that they’ll hold on to those for next time. For now, fans can savor the plethora of hits they have so far along with a few timeless covers.
Big Boat
Their latest released EP, ‘Big Boat,’ translates the band’s live sound into a studio setting quite successfully. The elated feeling one gets as an audience member at a Phish concert is maintained in when the record is being listened to on one’s iPod with the volume cranked up. Despite having a massive commercial presence, Phish as anything but traditional, and they are not playing to public expectation. This is apparent on the lengths of the tracks on this record, which are greatly uneven. While some songs last five minutes, others go well into the double digits, in keeping with the band’s improvisational music. However, the duration of songs does not matter; what matters is the language of music, which is highlighted on this record to the fullest. Without saying much through words, Phish says everything they feel like through chords, percussions and synthesizers. Big Boat is the comeback album which fails to disappoint.
The Quintessential Jam-Band
Phish has taken improvisational music to an all-new level by maintaining themselves as a jam-band. They play extensive venues with thousands of people making up the audience, and yet are unnerved by going into an unplanned musical frenzy without any disclaimer. The band members are so well-synced together, that they immediately pick up on this sudden shift in the music arrangement. Essentially, their concerts are an extension of a jam session; and the band is as comfortable as they would be lounging about and experimenting with music in the comforts of a studio. Their shows, therefore, present this intimacy, as if they are somehow more ‘live’ than other concerts. While Phish’s records are brilliant and definitely worthy of being blasted in your car’s stereo, their live sessions are a whole other joy for the avid music fan. And this year, they can be caught on one of their extensive stops in multiple cities. Purchase Phish tickets to enjoy a promising night with some of the best improvisational musicians to date.
