The NBA All Star Rookie Game is also known as the Rising Stars Challenge. It is an exhibition game held usually on Friday before the All Star Game and is part of the grand All Star Weekend. The players that compete in this game are rookies and sophomores, who are selected after careful scrutiny by the assistant coaches of the NBA. The Rookie Challenge, as it was known before 2012, was established in 1994 and consisted of randomly selected first and second year players. The NBA All Star Rookie Game is an annual event usually held in February every year. It started off as a game that randomly allocated first and second year players to teams. Two years later a more formal structure, consisting of teams from the Eastern and Western conference was introduced. In 2012 and 2013 the format was changed again, in which NBA superstars Shaquille O'Neal and Charles Barkley picked out their own teams. The two teams were known as Team Shaq and Team Chuck.
In 2012 over seventeen thousand people showed up to watch the new Rookie Game, along with the past NBA stars. Team Chuck won the game with one hundred and forty six points in reply to Team Shaq’s one hundred and thirty three points. In 2013, the same General Managers drafted the teams and a rematch of Team Shaq and Team Chuck was on the table. Unfortunately for Team Shaq, the rematch yielded similar results, with even a bigger margin of loss. While Team Shaq posted only one hundred and thirty five, Team Chuck got to an impressive score of one hundred and sixty five.
In 2014 the teams were chosen by Grant Hill and Chris Webber. The game was held at the New Orleans Arena and more than fourteen thousand seven hundred basketball fans turned up to watch the game. In 2014’s game a much more competitive game ensued where Team Hill defeated Team Webber by only six points. Unlike the regular NBA games, the All Star Rookie Game consists of two halves which are twenty minutes long. The rosters are smaller too, with each team having nine players in the squad. The game is sponsored by BBVA and is also referred to as the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge. In the past this particular game has also been known by names such as the ‘Youth Jam’ and the ‘Rookie Challenge’. The Rising Stars game will feature eighteen of the league’s best youngsters from the sophomore and rookie class. In the past players such as Kevin Durant and Kenneth Faried made their mark on the NBA with the opportunity they got in the Rookie Game. Durant set the record for most points in the game, with forty six points and brought himself under the spotlight. He went on to emerge as the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2008 and was the NBA MVP in 2014.Faried put up forty points on the board in the 2014 game and was the MVP of the NBA Rising Stars Challenge. The Rising Stars Challenge gives the youngsters a platform to rise to stardom in the NBA.
It has been two decades since the first Rookie game was played. Throughout the years not every team has had an equal opportunity for their players to make it to the All Star Rookie Game. The Cleveland Cavaliers have had the highest representation, with twenty three of their youngster participating in the rookie game over the years. They are followed by the Los Angeles Clippers who have twenty players that have featured in the game. The Memphis Grizzlies are at third spot with eighteen players having featured from their side.
There have been some interesting records in the Rising Stars Game over the years. Andre Drummond set the record for the highest number of rebounds. He scored twenty five rebounds in 2014’s game. In 2008 Daniel Gibson displayed an impressive show of shooting from the three point region and managed to get eleven three pointers. The second highest number of three pointers that have been scored are eight, by Kyrie Irving in 2012. However among these records, perhaps the most astounding is held by David Lee who had an impeccable shooting percentage. He scored fourteen baskets of fourteen shots to have a hundred percent shooting percentage. He made the record in 2007 and seven years later, the record still stands.
