The Las Vegas Aces are about to kick-start their first season as a Sin City team. They have been part of the Women's National Basketball Association for over two decades but have yet to clinch the league championship. The Aces will be looking to get off to a positive start as a Las Vegas based franchise because that will give them a lot of leverage moving forward. The support from their home crowd will count for a lot in this regard though. If you are a fan and have been looking forward to seeing them play live, then book Las Vegas Aces tickets now.
The Las Vegas Aces will soon get their latest campaign underway and it should be a cracking one too. They have just relocated to the Sin City and will be looking to make an impact right from the word go. You can play your part in helping your side get going by booking your Las Vegas Aces tickets.
The Beginning in Utah
The Aces trace their roots back to the days of the Utah Starzz, a side that was founded in 1997 as one of the original members of the WNBA. The Women's National Basketball Association was incepted in the year 1996 and started playing the next year. The Utah Starzz were on the list of the league's eight charter teams.
Initially, they did not have the best of times in the city. The Starzz did not qualify for the postseason in the first four years. They ended that jinx in 2001 but lost in the conference semifinals. In 2002, the Starzz went all the way to the conference finals but came up short against the Los Angeles Sparks.
Move to San Antonio
The NBA decided to do away with all the WNBA franchises it owned after the conclusion of the 2002 season. As a result of that, the Utah Jazz did not want to keep ownership of the Starzz. The WNBA team then began to look for new owners locally but they could not find one. The choice eventually came down to either folding the franchise altogether or finding owners out of Utah. Fortunately, Peter Holt, the San Antonio Spurs owner bought them and re-located the franchise to San Francisco. The name was changed to the San Antonio Silver Stars.
Their tenure in the new city however began just like it did in Utah. They failed to make it to the postseason in the first four seasons. In 2007, the management made a lot of changes to the roster. Not only that, but they also managed to keep hold of some established stars. All those changes worked and the Silver Stars came out of nowhere to become contenders in the Western Conference. They qualified for the postseason for the first time since their re-location to San Antonio. The Silver Stars then beat the Sacramento Monarchs in the conference semifinals. They were up against the Phoenix Mercury in the Western Finals but lost against the number one seeded team in the conference.
The 2008 Campaign
The San Antonio Silver Stars were one of the favorites heading into the 2008 campaign and they lived up to the hype too. They put on board the best record in the Western Conference and clinched the top seed for the playoffs. They beat the Monarchs 2-1 in the semifinals and then proceeded to topple the Los Angeles Sparks by the same score in the Western Conference Finals to clinch their maiden conference championship.
More importantly, the Silver Stars were now into the WNBA Finals to face the Detroit Shock. Their opponents were making their third appearance in the finals in as many seasons and their experience showed when it mattered. The Silver Star lost the WNBA Finals 3-0.
The Silver Stars qualified for the playoffs in the following four seasons but could not get past the conference semifinal round. In 2013, they failed to qualify for the postseason for the first time since 2006.
The team's name was change to the San Antonio Stars at the end of the 2013 season but that did not bring about any change in fortunes. They qualified for the postseason in 2014 but could not go past the semifinal round. The next three seasons did not bring about any postseason berths and the management decided to put the team up for sale at the end of the 2017 campaign.
Move to Las Vegas
Both the WNBA and the NBA sanctioned the sale of the franchise to MGM Resorts. The idea was to move the franchise to Las Vegas for it to start playing at the famous Mandalay Bay Events Center. On December 11, 2017, an announcement was made that the franchise will be renamed the Las Vegas Aces.
Will they add to their solitary conference crown this year? They are a decent team with a decent roster. If you want to play your part in helping the team make a mark this season, then book your Las Vegas Aces tickets and support them live at the arena.
