Similar to many other teams that are a part of the WNBA, the Sky is not associated with a counterpart belonging to NBA. However, the Chicago Bull’s team plays in the same association. The general manager of the team at the moment is Pokey Chatman who also happens to be the current head coach of the Sky. Jeff House and Christie Sides are the present assistant coaches. The team has yet to win a conference title as well as a championship. The official mascot of the team is known as Sky Guy.

For a brief period of time the franchise was known as WNBA Chicago. Dave Cowens, a former player of NBA as well as a coach was given the designation as the team’s head coach as well as general manager on the 27th of May, 2005. The initial home of the team became the UIC Pavilion. By the 20th of September, 2005 the official logo along with the team colors were debuted at the esteemed Adler Planetarium. The beginning of the team in Chicago was impeccably highlighted by many known WNBA star players featuring in the introduction ceremony such as Diana Taurasi who was the Rookie of the Year of WNBA in 2004, Ruth Riley, the champion of WNBA of 2003, Sue Bird the Rookie of the Year of WNBA in 2002 and Temeka Johnson the Rookie of the Year in 2005.
An expansion draft was held to aid in constructing the roster of players in November 2005 for the Sky. Amid the brilliant selections were names such as Bernadette Ngoyisa hailing from the team of the san Antonio Silver Stars, Stacey Dales from the team of the Washington Mystics, Brooke Wyckoff from Connecticut Sun alongside Elaine Powell from the team of Detroit Shock.
