Atlanta Dream Cities
The team has been part of WNBA since 2008, when it played its first season. Atlanta Dream’s history has been short, yet it has been a successful one. It has been giving many entertaining matches to its fans and has marked itself as a strong team. The team has managed to be in the WNBA Finals twice in a short span of time. Atlanta Dream plays their home games at Philips Arena.
The history of the franchise goes back to 1995. The interest to have a women’s professional basketball team in Atlanta was felt years back but the efforts did not materialize until 2008. In 2007, Ron Terwilliger, an Atlanta businessman and CEO of a real estate company became the owner of the Atlanta franchise. He was with the team till 2009, after whom Kathy Betty took over. An online contest was held, where people could vote to decide the team name and the team colors. A few names and colors were offered as choices and in 2008 the team’s name as Dream was announced. The name was an inspiration from native Atlantan Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s most famous speech. The colors chosen were sky blue, red and white.
For the head coach, a former NBA played Dennis Rodman forwarded his name, but Ron wanted Atlanta Dream to be headed by a female coach since it seemed a more apt choice for a women’s league. Marynell Meadors has the honor of being the first head coach and the general manager. She was awarded Coach of the Year Award in 2009.
The first win for the Dream came to them in July 2008 against the Chicago Sky. The next year, Atlanta went on to go beyond their previous record by 14 wins, but the season ended in disappointment. The year 2012 proved to be a good year as well for the team. They went in the WNBA Finals and faced the best team of the league, the Seattle Storm. In 2011, again they managed to be in the WNBA Finals but could not secure a win.
Although they have not been able to secure a win but taking into account the few years of its history and that they landed as the second best team in the WNBA Finals says a lot about their expertise as a team. With each year Atlanta Dream seems to be getting better. It is the resilience and competitive nature that is their strength and is what the fans love about them. The future for the team seems a promising one. If you want to catch their exciting match as they face their rivals then make sure you have the Atlanta Dream tickets with you.
