Carolina Hurricanes: A Look Back
The Carolina Hurricanes came into being in 1971 as the New England Whalers. They were part of the World Hockey Association (WHA), which operated in North America from 1972 to 1979. The Canes enjoyed plenty of success during their stint in the WHA; they were Eastern Division champions in the league's first three seasons and won the inaugural Avco World Trophy (awarded to the league winners in the WHA) in 1973. When the WHA merged with the NHL in 1979, the Whalers became part of the revamped new league and took the name Hartford Whalers.
Nearly two decades later, in 1997, the franchise relocated to North Carolina and rebranded itself as the Carolina Hurricanes. For their first season (1997-98) in the Tar Heel State, the Canes were part of the Northeast Division of the NHL's Eastern Conference. After that, they shifted to the Southeast Division and competed in this bracket until the 2012-13 campaign
Since then, the team has been a member of the Eastern Conference Metropolitan Division. The Hurricanes are affiliated with minor league sides, the Charlotte Checkers (AHL) and the Greenville Swamp Rabbits (ECHL).
Carolina Hurricanes: Current Playoff Picture
.So far, the 2019-20 regular season has had a bit of everything for the Hurricanes. There have been good runs, while season-ending injuries to a couple of key players have certainly made things tough.
The important thing is that the Hurricanes are still in a good position to make the postseason. One year earlier, they hit their stride at the right time and carried the momentum all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals. The situation is somewhat similar this time around, and few would bet against the Canes putting together a good home stretch run to edge their challengers out of the playoffs.
PNC Arena: Serving the Hurricanes Since 1999
The Hurricanes play at the PNC Arena, which has a capacity of 18,680 for hockey games and 19,722 for basketball games. These include 2,000 club seats, 13 loge boxes, and 59 suites. In addition to the Canes, the NC State Wolfpack men's basketball team is the other primary tenant of the PNC Arena. To experience the arena's game-day environment, get your Carolina Hurricanes tickets today.
In the past, it was also the home of the Arena Football League's (AFL) Carolina Cobras and has been a popular concert venue. Over the years, Bruce Springsteen, Justin Timberlake, Prince, Taylor Swift, Elton John, Celine Dion, and Lady Gaga, among others, have performed here.
Notable Achievements
The Hurricanes are a competitive unit more often than not. Thus far, they have won three Division titles, two Conference crowns, and one Stanley Cup. The current team is also eager to write another glorious chapter in the Hurricanes' history. Follow their journey by getting tickets here.
