The team was initially formed as the New England Whalers in 1972. It was a part of the World Hockey Association for seven years until 1979, after which it joined the NHL as the Hartford Whalers. After two more seasons as the Whalers, the team relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina and became the Carolina Hurricanes in 1997. Now, the Hurricanes play home at the PNC Arena that opened in 1999 with a construction cost of over $220 million. The multi-purpose arena hosts concerts as well as basketball matches. It can house over eighteen thousands and five hundred people for ice hockey games.

The Carolina Hurricanes won its first and only ‘Stanley Cup’ in 2006. Over the years the team has also bagged three ‘Divisional Titles’, two ‘Conference Championships’ and two ‘Prince of Wales Trophies’. Currently led by Head Coach Kirk Muller and General Manager Jim Rutherford, the Hurricanes comprise of exceptionally talented players including Ryan Murphy, Jay Harrison, Nathan Gerbe, Justin Faulk, Patrick Dwyer and Kevin Westgarth. With fifty-six goals, Blaine Stoughton has scored the most goals for the team in one season, whereas as Mike Rogers has the most points in one season with 105 points.
