Formed in 1971, the Carolina Hurricanes (formerly known as New England Whalers) won their first Stanley Cup during the season of 2005-2006 by defeating the Edmonton Oilers by a score of 4-3. The team joined the National Hockey League in 1979 and has been an active member since then. With ground roots in North Carolina, the team plays from the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference. Home games of the Hurricanes are played at the PNC Arena.
The team gained national recognition in the playoffs of 2002 with notable performances of Kevin Weekes, Niclas Wallin and Arturs Irbe. The team made ‘franchise records’ by winning fifty two victories in a season, one hundred and twelve points in a season, nine consecutive winning streaks, twelve consecutive home wins and forty-five best shot differentials in a game. The period 2010-2011 was a pivotal year for the team. Skinner, being the youngest player of the league was recognized as the player who would lead all rookies in points. He received the Calder Trophy. Skinner was honored as the first player in the history of the franchise to receive the award.
