- Wes Unseld has played the most amount of minutes for the Wizards with 35,832.
- Elvin Hayes has scored the highest number of field goals for the Wizards with 6,251 to his name.
- The Washington Wizards and the Washington Mystics have the same owners.
- Wes Unseld has played 984 games to date, the highest by any other Wizards player in history.
- Wizards were created in 1961 as the Chicago Packers and were the first expansion team in NBA history.
The team was founded in 1961 as the Chicago Packers, but the franchise shifted to Baltimore, Maryland in 1963 and was renamed the Baltimore Bullets. The franchise moved again, this time to Washington, and the name was changed to the Washington Bullets from 1974 to 1997. Owner Abe Pollin finally renamed the team the Washington Wizards in 1997, after selecting the name from a list of finalists that included Dragons, Stallions, Express, and Wizards, chosen through a contest. The Wizards have had a thrilling rivalry with the Cleveland Cavaliers since 2006, and the two teams have faced each other 36 times to date. The Wizards are headquartered in Washington, D.C., and currently play all their home games at the spacious Verizon Center.
The Washington Wizards or Bullets had a good start, winning Divisional titles consecutively from 1969 to 1975. In 1973, the Bullets made it to the NBA playoffs, but lost in the first round to the New York Knicks. In 1975, they won their second Conference title by beating the experienced Boston Celtics and advanced to the NBA finals, where they were surprisingly defeated by the Golden State Warriors. In 1978, the Bullets shined again by winning the Conference title and made history by storming to the NBA finals, beating the Seattle SuperSonics and winning their first and only NBA Championship. In 1979, they again stood first in the Division and won yet another Conference title, this time beating the San Antonio Spurs, and flew to the NBA finals again, facing the SuperSonics, but lost in a nail-biting match. The Bullets hold the unique record of being the only team to have played four times in the NBA finals during the 1970s decade.
The Washington Bullets in the beginning of the 1980s went into a bad patch as the team couldn't live up to the mark they were famous for; star players like Wes Unseld retired and Elvin Hayes was traded to the Houston Rockets. The Bullets acquired fine players like Muggsy Bogues and Manute Bol, but this couldn't improve things much as the team continued to play a very mediocre game and failed to impress the spectators. The Bullets qualified for the NBA playoffs in 1988 but lost in the first round to the Detroit Pistons, and afterwards fans waited for nine years to see them play again in the NBA playoffs. During the decade of the 1990s, the team was finally named the Washington Wizards, but things didn't improve much until the early 2000s, despite the fact that the Wizards had players like Chris Webber, Otis Thorpe, Mitch Richmond, and Richard Hamilton. In 2001, change came when legendary player Michael Jordan joined the Wizards as team president and then came out of retirement to play for them. The Wizards' season ended much better with more wins thanks to Jordan, but he had to take rest due to injury. Jordan joined back in the 2003-04 season and again scored well and improved the Wizards' point position.
In 2004, Jordan was fired due to differences, and since then the Washington Wizards have undergone a major rebuilding process. However, they still have not won a Divisional or Conference title. Just recently, in 2010, the Wizards have acquired three of the finest star players: John Wall (team captain), Kevin Seraphin, and Kirk Hinrich. Some other notable players on the roster are Cartier Martin, Hamady Diaye, Al Thornton, and Jianlian Yi. The Washington Wizards are all set to stage a stunning comeback, and their upcoming match will definitely be full of excitement. So, book your Washington Wizards tickets only from us to have a riveting experience!
Race for the Playoffs
With the NBA season drawing to a close, the race for playoff berths is getting tighter by the game. The Washington Wizards failed to reach the postseason last year, but reached the Conference Semifinals in two consecutive seasons before that. This year, the team looks set to reach the playoffs again and, as of March 7th, are third in their conference and first in their division. Unless their season derails completely, the Wizards should be a part of the postseason. However, it remains to be seen just how far they can go in the NBA playoffs.
