Formed as a franchise in 1946 under the name of Buffalo Bisons, the Atlanta Hawks is an American professional basketball team. The team is based in Atlanta, Georgia, with Mike Woodson as its coach in his fifth season. Center Don Otten and coach Nat Hickey were the team's first stars, and in 1946, the team moved to Illinois at the discretion of owner Ben Kerner. The region was then known as "Tri-Cities" and is now labeled as Quad Cities. Kerner thus named the team the Tri-Cities Blackhawks, due to its association with a war fought in Illinois.
