The Terrapins have long-standing traditions of fair play, competition, and sportsmanlike spirit. Their games are full of thrill and excitement, and their fans and supporters are known for their loyalty, optimism, and enthusiasm. They always come in huge numbers to support their favorites, and no matter if they win or lose, they give them full support by singing inspirational and celebratory songs. It is because of this fan craze for the Terrapins that The Princeton Review rated Maryland as #1 in its annual "Students Pack the Stadiums" ranking of collegiate athletic support in 2008.
The Terrapins fanatics show their support by practicing crazy things during matches, such as reading and shaking newspapers and yelling "suck" during opponents' introductions, and celebrating with fireworks and crackers. The Crew is a group that continuously supports the soccer team of the university, and their fans have songs for every moment, including the Victory Song, Fight Song, Alma Mater, Turtle Power, and Heroes in a Half-Shell. Another attraction is the University of Maryland's Dance Team, which is part of the excitement and tradition of Maryland athletics. The squad performs at all home football and men's basketball games, and also makes appearances at selected away games and other University of Maryland Athletic events. Along with them is the Mighty Sound of Maryland, a marching band that cheers the Terrapins on to victory. The fans of this popular team have also made the Terrapin Club and Junior Terps Club, which offer different activities to the team's fans.
All the sporting teams of the University of Maryland are headed by the Athletic Department, which is headed by the Director of Athletics. The department has an Athletic Council and an academic support facility. Currently headed by Deborah A. Yow, the department always has one Senior Woman Administrator and one Faculty Representative to handle duties in their respective areas. The foundation of this program began with the formation of Maryland Agricultural College and the University of Maryland in 1856. Between 1921 and 1953, the Terps were part of the Southern Conference. On May 8, 1953, Maryland seceded with six other Southern Conference schools to form the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Since then, they have been playing various men's and women's sports. The current enrollment of the Maryland Terrapins is 35,329.
The Athletic Department provides top-notch facilities to all the teams. The University has many grounds for its home games. The Football and Men's Lacrosse teams play their games in Byrd Stadium, which has a capacity of 51,500 spectators. The Comcast Center holds Men's and Women's Basketball games, while the Comcast Center Gymnasium is used for Gymnastics, Volleyball, and Wrestling. Shipley Field and Robert E. Taylor Stadium host Baseball and Softball championships, respectively. Men's and Women's Tennis is played at the Tennis Center in College Park, while the Maryland Golf Course hosts Men's and Women's Golf games. Other prominent venues include Kehoe Track at Ludwig Field, the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium (for swimming and water polo), the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex, and the Field Hockey and Wrestling Practice Facility.
Two of the most popular Terrapins teams are the football and basketball teams. The Terrapins football team has won many championships, including two national championships, nine ACC championships, two Southern Conference championships, two perfect undefeated seasons, numerous All-Americans and Hall of Fame inductees, and 22 bowl game appearances. The basketball team has emerged as the winner six times in total, comprising of 3-3 wins for both the men's and women's teams. Another sport in which the Terps excel is lacrosse, where the men's team has won five championships and the women's team has won three titles so far. The Terps have also performed well in baseball, women's basketball, and men's golf, emerging as winners two times in each game. The swimming and diving team outperformed others by winning seven championships in total; while the men's tennis team and men's ice hockey teams have been ACC Champions two times each in 1957, 1964, and 1999, 2001, respectively.
The Terps do not have a single generally recognized rival overall, but the Maryland's rivalry with Duke in men's basketball, Penn State University and Virginia in football, and Johns Hopkins in lacrosse take on the interest of many and their games always make headlines. The Terps always ensure a thrilling and exciting ride for their supporters, and always make them proud with knockout performances.
Once again, the Maryland Terrapins are ready to provide the ultimate sports experience to their fans. If you want to catch them live, then there is no better place than this one where you can get good deals on Maryland Terrapins tickets. Watch out for the Terps as they will never let you down.
