The Maryland Terrapins are the sports and athletics teams that represent the University of Maryland. The Terrapins or more commonly known as the Terps, play in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Prior to their nickname of the Terps, the sports teams of University of Maryland were known as the Old Liners, as the nickname of the state was “The Old Line State”. They initially participated in the Southern Conference, however as the conference placed the Terps on probation, the University of Maryland became the founding member of the Atlantic Coast Conference along with six other schools. Officially the football program at the University began in 1892. John Markey was hired as the first paid coach for Maryland in 1902. In 1905 H. C. "Curley" Byrd, became a member of the football team. He played in the team till 1911 after which he served the Terps football team in the capacity of head coach till 1934. He was responsible for building the first stadium at the university, the Byrd Stadium. Out of their nine ACC Championships, they have twice won three consecutive titles, from 1974 – 1976 and from 1983 – 1985. The Terps team mascot is Testudo, a Diamond back Terrapin. Testudo’s three hundred pound bronze replica can be seen at the University campus.
