The Carolina Hurricanes is a professional ice hockey team formed in 1972. Originally named the New England Whalers, the team became a member of the World Hockey Association. It relocated from Boston to Hartford, as a result of increasing difficulty to schedule games due to the presence of rival team, the Boston Bruins in the area. After becoming the Hartford Whalers the team joined the NHL and enjoyed 3 winning seasons in between 1979 and 1997.
