Following Knight's departure and the 2001-2002 season, a new general manager was hired in 2002. His name was Jerry West, a former Los Angeles Laker and Hall of Fame member. He won the award for NBA Executive of the Year later in the 2003-2004 season. Following West's arrival, the team went through many changes. Sidney Lowe, the team's head coach, was removed due to a 0-8 loss in one of the season's games. While the 2002-2003 season was ongoing, another coach, Hubie Brown, was appointed for the team. In the following season in 2004, the Grizzlies made team history by managing to make the playoffs, and Brown won the award for NBA Coach of the Year.

During the 2004-2005 season, Brown resigned from his position as head coach of the Grizzlies. To replace him, Jerry West hired Mike Fratello, an analyst at TNT and former coach, as the team's new coach. This change resulted in an improvement in the team's record, and they managed to advance to the postseason again. Michael Heisley is the major owner of the team, owning ninety-five percent of the shares, with the remaining five percent operated by various owners such as J. R. Hyde, the founder of AutoZone, Barbara Hyde, his wife, Staley Cates, and Elliot Perry. The team colors are Memphis Midnight Blue, White, Grizzlies Gold, Beale Street Blue, and Smoke Blue. The current general manager is Chris Wallace and the head coach is Lionel Hollins. The team has yet to win any Championship titles, Conference titles, or Division titles. Two teams belonging to North American sports leagues are based in Tennessee, but neither of them play in Memphis, making the Grizzlies the only team to play in the city.

Ja Morant Named NBA’s Western Conference Rookie of the Month
