Arkanas Razorbacks is the name given to the University of Arkanas' sports teams. There are total of 19 varsity teams out of which 8 are men's teams and 11 of them are women's teams. The teams play 13 different games. Hogs is the name commonly used which is also their mascot. The sporst department is in existence for almost a century. The university is a member of the Western Division of Southeastern Conference and competes in Division I NCAA and FBS I in football. During the early history of the university, the team colors were cardinal and purple, but during 2000's the colors were changed to a more prominent touch of black. During 1909, in a match played by the Arkansas Razorbacks team led by Hall of Fame coach Hugo Bezdek, Arkansas team finished the match scoring 7 - 0. Besdek called his team the wild "razorback hogs", resulting in their Hogs nickname and the famous slogan "Woo, Pig! Soorie"
Frank Broyles, a famous retired national football player was hired as a football coach during 1956. Broyles served the university for nineteen years and under his leadership the team was awarded with "National Championship 1964" by Helms Athletic Foundation and Football Writers Association of America. The same year, Arkansas Razorbacks managed to win the bowl game against Nebraska. The same team was ranked #2. They played the same year against the #1's of that time, Texas Longhorns, a notable game in the history of Razorbacks, which was attended by then President Richard Nixon.
During 1994, Arkansas Razorbacks basketball team, led by Nolan Richardson, won NCAA Tournament. For over two decades, the track and field team of the Hogs was under the coaching of the legendary player John McDonnell. During his era, the track and field team won forty championships of NCAA, including nineteen indoor track, eleven cross country, ten outdoor track and thirty seven Southwest conference championships. Under his leadership the team also managed to win five National Triple Crowns.
Arkansas Razorbacks have a history of rivalry against Texas Longhorns of University of Texas. From Texas the team has another rivalry with Texas A&M. Over the years rivalry has also developed with Louisiana State University Tigers and Kentucky Wildcats. The match between LSU Tigers and Razorbacks is usually held at the end of the season and the winning team gets to take home the "Golden Boot", making the rivalry even more exciting.
Arkansas Razorbacks mascot is called "Tusk" and is a Russian boar, resembling the symbolic razorback hog. Their current logo is a red fierce looking red hog.
