About Washington Mystics

Washington Mystics play their home games at the Verizon Center, which is often called Phone Booth due to its close connection to telecommunication companies. Sitting on top of Gallery Place station on Washington Metro, near Washington’s Chinatown, the center is also home to NBA’s Washington Wizards, NHL’s Washington Capitals and men’s basketball from Georgetown University. The arena opened in December 1997 with a seating capacity of twenty thousand, two hundred and eighty-two seats for basketball games. Between 1998 and 2000 and from 2002 to 2004, the Mystics stood atop all other WNBA teams with reference to attendance, having sold the many cheap Washington Mystics tickets. In order to celebrate such high attendance the team has hung as many as six banners form the rafter of the arena, as an ode to the Mystics as the Attendance Champions.
Washington Mystics are noted for being the earliest WNBA teams from its expansion phase. Their first season played in 1998, was recorded for bringing the worst score to WNBA with a 3-27 score, but the team was led on by Nikke McCray, a fellow Olympian. Though the team did not enter that year’s playoffs, it was expected to perform high as a result of 1999’s drafting in Chamique Holdsclaw, the star of University of Tennessee. With her presence the team showed improvement but could not make it to the playoffs since they ended with a mere record of 12-20. The former then led the team in the following season of 2000, in which it lost the playoffs to New York Liberty with a close score of 14-18.
Washington Mystics played one of their best seasons in 2020, in which they were led by Katie Smith, Crystal Langhorne and Lindsey Harding, with whom the team earned first position in the East scoring a record of 22-12. In the first round the Mystics were swept by Atlanta Dream, who then entered the WNBA Finals.
