About Vegas Golden Knights

The Backdrop

National Hockey League’s association with Las Vegas began in the year 1991. That was the year when the Los Angeles Kings took on the New York Rangers in an exhibition outdoor hockey encounter. The Sin City has also played host to the Frozen Fury, the preseason tournament that pits the Colorado Avalanche and the Los Angeles Kings against each other. The city has also hosted multiple NHL Awards events over the years.

Las Vegas was however still without its own hockey team. Then in 2009, rumors began to swirl that Jerry Bruckheimer was thinking about moving the Phoenix Coyotes to the state of Nevada. Those reports did not materialize into anything concrete though.

The Wheels Are Set In Motion

Five years later, in the year 2014 rumors of the NHL granting Las Vegas a hockey side began to make rounds. The NHL however refuted these rumors. Then in November of the same year, it was reported that the NHL had picked Maloof Family and Bill Foley to head a team that would table a bid for a Las Vegas based hockey team.

The next month, NHL gave them the go ahead to start a season ticket drive to check the level of interest in the city for a hockey team. The drive kicked off in February of 2015 and the interested parties were asked to put in a ten percent deposit. The goal was to reach ten thousand deposits and the target was met in April.

The Golden Knights Arrive

In June of the same year, the NHL opened the window for owners to table their bids for expansion sides. Foley had managed to amass over thirteen thousand deposits by this point. The NHL received two bids, one from the Quebecor to bring to life the Quebec Nordiques while the other one was by Foley. Both bids moved to the second phase and then the third phase.

On June 22, 2016, a league owners’ meeting was held in the Sin City and the Las Vegas bid was accepted. The new team was slated to begin playing from the 2017-2018 season. The Golden Knights became the city’s first ever professional sports franchise.

The Golden Knights took on the Dallas Stars on October 6, 2017 in their first ever NHL game and won. Their first home clash came against the Arizona Coyotes on October 10 and they won that clash too. The team will need its fans to back them to the hilt. They are looking strong but it is a long season and you can now check the Vegas Golden Knights schedule and book your Vegas Knights tickets to play your part in helping your team get over the line.
