About Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the most successful and well known teams not only in the NBA, but in the sporting world at large. They were also listed by Forbes as being the second most valuable franchise in the NBA, with an estimated net worth of $2.7 billion.

About the Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers play for Los Angeles, California, at the Staples Center. They are one of two teams that play for the city, the other one being the Los Angeles Clippers, and both teams share the Staple Center as their home stadium.

The Lakers are one of the most successful and popular teams in the NBA. They have won 16 NBA championships and have consistently sold out every one of their home games since the 2007-8 season. The team also has the most popular merchandise of all teams in the NBA.

Over the years, the Lakers have had iconic players in their line-up including Magic Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Kobe Bryant.

The team is owned by the Jerry Buss family trust since 1979. The current president of the team is Jeanie Buss, the general manager is Mitch Kupchak, and the head coach is Luke Walton.

The Early Years

The franchise was initially founded in 1947 as the Minneapolis Lakers and originally played in Minneapolis. The name for the team came from the state’s nickname, ‘Land of 10,000 Lakes’.

In the early days of the NBA, the Minneapolis Lakers did exceptionally due to center George Mikan, a player often described as the ‘first superstar’ of the NBA. The team eventually relocated to Los Angeles in the 1960-61 season due to financial troubles.

Since moving to L.A., the team made it to the finals six times in the 60’s but lost each time to the Boston Celtics, thereby beginning what has become one of the longest rivalries in the league.

Each year, the team worked tirelessly and acquired some of the biggest talents in the league in order to build up their reputation as one of the strongest teams in the NBA.

Notable Achievements

The Lakers have had numerous successes over the years. They hold the record in the NBA for the longest winning streak of 33 consecutive games, a record which was established in the 1971-72 season. They have also had numerous successful players as part of their roster over the years, including 21 Hall of Famers.

Of these players, four of them, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal, Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar have also won the MVP award in the NBA for a combined total of eight awards.
