About Charlotte Hornets

The Start

In the year 1985, the NBA decided to add three expansion teams to the league by the time the 1988-89 season rolls into town. Those plans were later changed and the number was increased to four. George Shinn was a businessman from North Carolina and put together a group of businessmen to form a consortium to run the prospective team.

Shinn had his critics who thought his plans would never turn into anything substantial. Those people had not banked on the pulling power of the Charlotte Coliseum. David Stern, the NBA Commissioner at the time, then called Shinn on April 5, 1987 to inform him that Charlotte had been granted an expansion team.

The Hornets Start to Play

A contest was held to pick a name for the new team and as a result of that “Hornets” was selected. Carl Scheer was brought on board as the first president and GM. The Hornets stepped on the basketball court for the first time on November 4, 1988 against the Cleveland Cavaliers at home. They lost the encounter 133-93. They had to wait just four more days to record their first ever triumph. They beat the Los Angeles Clippers 117-105 to start their journey.

The Charlotte Hornets made it to the playoffs for the first time in the 1992-1993 season. They won beat the Celtics in the First Round 3-1 but came up short against the Knicks 4-1 in the conference semifinals. The Hornets qualified for the postseason six times in the next nine seasons but failed to win any championship.

The Charlotte Bobcats

The franchise re-located to New Orleans and after a gap of two years, the NBA decided to give Charlotte a new team.  The expansion team was awarded in 2002 and it was named the Bobcats. The Bobcats did not have best of times in the NBA. They began to play in the 2004-2005 season for the first time and made it to the playoffs only twice between then and the 2013-2014 season.

The Hornets Return

The franchise had been bought by Michael Jordan in 2010 though and in 2013, the franchise applied to the NBA to allow the name to be changed to the Hornets start the 2014-2015 season. The approval was granted. They have made it to the playoffs once since and now have got to up the ante to make this a regular occurrence. If you want to support them, then check the Hornets’ schedule and book your Hornets game tickets to see them in action, live.
