About Philadelphia Union

The Philadelphia Union was founded after attempts for many years to bring Major League Soccer to Philadelphia, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the nation. In 2001, the first attempts were made by a group of investors trying to attract an MLS franchise to a soccer specific stadium that was planned to be built. This was, however, blocked by the MetroStars, today the New York Red Bulls, who had the right since it would disturb their seventy five mile large competition free zone.
In 2006, plans to build a stadium on the Rowan University’s campus in Glassboro, New Jersey were put in action, with the stadium set to play host to the Rowan University football team and an MLS club. The proposal, however, was not successful and led to Keystone Sports & Entertainment planning a site under the Commodore Barry Bridge. In 2007, the Sons of Ben group of soccer fans advocated for an MLS expansion franchise in Philadelphia, leading to a sixteenth team added to the MLS in 2008.
In 2008, the Philadelphia Union was founded and in 2009, it signed on the Reading Rage of the USL Premier Development League as their official minor league affiliate. During the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, the player selected as the number one pick was Oregon State University’s Danny Mwanga, with other picks including US U–17 National Team’s Jack Mclnerney and UCLA’s Amobi Okugo. During the same year, the Harrisburg City Islanders became one of the affiliates of the franchise. In 2012, they formed their first partnership win an international team, with the Costa Rican First Divisions Deportivo Saprissa S.A.D.
The main supporters and fans group of the franchise is the Sons of Ben, who were also instrumental in the founding of the franchise. The group is named after Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers and a Philadelphia native. Other supporter groups of the franchise are the Tammany Saints, the IllegitimateS, the Bridge Crew, the Corner Creeps and the Bearfight Brigade. The franchise has fierce rivalries with the New York Red Bulls and DC United, two of their closest neighbors. They also have rivalries with the Seattle Sounders. Within the soccer club, Sebastien Le Toux holds the record for the most goals, at twenty seven, the most assists at twenty four and the most shots at one hundred and eighty four. With some of the best players in the Major League Soccer, this is one of the best soccer clubs around. So what are you waiting for?
