History of the Oakland Athletics goes way back to when the team was formed under the moniker of Philadelphia Athletics in 1901. After playing as Kansas City Athletics for some time, the team finally found its way to Oakland later in 1968. During its time in Philadelphia, Athletics found enormous amount of success and claimed five World Series titles including two back-to-back titles in 1929 and 1930. However shortly after, the team’s on field performance declined to a great extent leading to its relocation to Kansas City. With more than a decade full of mediocrity in Kansa City, Athletics landed in Oakland and from there onwards things started to look up for the team.
Shortly after relocating to Oakland, Athletics emerged as a dominating force in the league and surpassed all odds with three consecutive World Series titles starting from 1972. The early 70s squad was led by the greats like Rollie Fingers, Reggie Jackson and Catfish Hunter. Later, as the ownership of the team changed hands, Athletics claimed three consecutive American League pennants starting from 1988. The franchise claimed its ninth and most recent World Series title in 1989. Even though Athletics haven’t been able win another World Series title since their last win in 1989, they still have been making frequent playoff appearances.
In 2002, Oakland Athletics outdid all the past American League records after winning twenty straight games during their regular season. This feat remains to be one of the shining moments in franchise’s history and has also been the subject of 2011 biographical sports drama Moneyball starring Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
After having two consecutive winning seasons and division titles in 2012 and 2013, Oakland Athletics are eyeing the top of AL West standings yet again for the current ongoing season. During both of these seasons, their post season run was cut short in ALDS by Detroit Tigers and this season Athletics will be looking at going beyond that par. Like always, Oakland Athletics will be playing their home games at the Oakland Coliseum and as the current season progresses, Athletics have already started to emerge as a dominating force within their divisional standings.
