About Utep

The University of Texas El Paso founded in 1914, has one of the strongest and versatile sports program in the country. Also referred as UTEP, the institution takes pride in having produced many accomplished sportspersons. The athletics teams of the college are commonly known as the Miner and comprises of both men and women. UTEP athletic program is built upon a rich tradition of excellence. Miner student-athletes have made a name for themselves in various sports like basketball, football, golf, volleyball, soccer, cross country, track and field as well as tennis. Miner men have several championship titles to their name. The basketball team was the national champion in 1966, cross country players are seven-time winners along with thirteen wins between track and field indoor as well as outdoor team. Miner women are also in step with the men and have many feathers in their cap. The soccer team has excelled over the years and won multiple WAC titles. In 2008 two UTEP basketball players, Natasha Lacy and Izabela Piekarska were chosen in WNBA draft, becoming the first players in the program history to be selected. The same year tennis player, Weronika Bloczynska received her fourth All-Conference Honor.

UTEP's basketball program is one of the oldest in the country. The men's team has made seventeen appearances in NCAA Tournaments and was the winner of the historic 1966 game. The head coach Don Haskins formed the first ever starting lineup of five black players at college level and defeated the favorites Kentucky team. The achievement has been documented in the hall of famer Haskins autobiography as well as in the 2006 movie, "Glory Road". The entire 1966 Miners team along with Nathaniel Archibald have been inducted in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Miner football team has grown into a successful competitor under the dynamic leadership of the coach Mike Price. With their high scoring offense, they have won 30 titles in the past five years and have made two bowl appearances.

UTEP athletic management has provided the athletes with the state-of-the-art facilities that are available within the college premises. Two arenas have been built for Miner teams where they play all of their home games. The Don Haskins Center is the home of the basketball team and has been named after the legendary coach. Formed in 1976, the center has a capacity of more than 12,000 people. The venue has witnessed many thrilling buzzer-beaters and record setting performances as well as hosted preseason NBA games. The Sun Bowl Stadium serves as the home of the UTEP football team. It opened its doors in 1963 and boasts a capacity of almost 52,000 people. The arena has the honor of hosting the first ever Texas versus the National all star college football game in 2007. To facilitate the players, over 1,200 seats Magoffin Auditorium has also been constructed which often houses athletic conferences and meetings.

UTEP athletic teams have a huge fan-base. Miner supporters are present at their all home as well as away games and cheer their team to victory.
