The Texas A&M University's Aggies play in the Southeastern Conference of the NCAA Division I FBS. Eric Hyman is the college’s athletic director, and manages a program that fields twenty varsity teams. The Aggies were one of the charter programs of the Southwest Conference, until it was dissolved in 1996. They then joined the Big 12 Conference and remained members till 2012, after which they joined the Southeastern Conference.

Founded in 1894, the Aggies’ football team particularly stands out. The team is a three-time national champion and was ranked eighteenth in the country in 2013 AP Poll. During the 2012 to 2013 season, the Aggies ranked fifth in the US as per the AP Polls and have often been ranked in the top twenty five in the country.


Texas A&M has two active rivalries, one with the Arkansas Razorbacks and the other with the LSU Tigers. Their rivalry with the Razorbacks dates back to 1899. The Aggies LSU rivalry is much more recent, sparking off when the university joined the SEC in 2012. Indeed, many fans have speculated that LSU is set to become the college's primary rivals. Historically, the Aggies have also had a fierce rivalry with the Texas Longhorns. This is a rivalry that gave rise to the Lone Star Showdown that ended in 2012 following the Aggies move to SEC.


The current football team is coached by Kevin Sumlin. He is in his third year as the team's coach and has so far put up a 25–6 record, which amounts to a .806 winning percentage. He was crowned SEC Coach of the Year in 2012.


The  Aggies have played in thirty five Bowl games so far and have won sixteen. Along with their three national championships, they have also won eighteen conference titles and two of their players have won the highly coveted Heisman Trophy. Twenty two Aggies footballers have also been honored as consensus All–Americans.
