He became the youngest NCAA Division I FBS coach at the time and has continued to lead the team ever since. The football team plays awesome games at the forty seven thousand capacity Ryan Field and is a member of the West Division of the Big Ten Conference. In 2009, the two teams also began competing for the Land of Lincoln Trophy and from 1947 until 2008, they played in the Sweet Sioux Tomahawk Trophy tournament.

Fifteen Wildcats players have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, including Pat Fitzgerald, former linebacker and current coach of the team, in 2008.
