About Northwestern Wildcats

The Northwestern Wildcats football team has been active since way back in 1876. The team has gone on to become Number One in the nation twice so far, a feat that makes it one of the most amazing teams in the nation. As of 2013, the Wildcats football team has played in nine bowl games, including the Rose Bowl in 1996, the Citrus Bowl in 1997, the Alamo Bowl in 2000 and 2008, the Motor City Bowl in 2003, the Sun Bowl in 2005, the Outback Bowl in 2010 and the TicketCity Bowl and Meineke Car Care Bowl in 2011. They also won the postseason competition following 2013's Gator Bowl.

In 2006, Pat Fitzgerald, a former All–American linebacker, became the football coach, following Randy Walker's death. He became the youngest NCAA Division I FBS coach at the time and has continued to lead the team ever since. The football team plays awesome games at the forty seven thousand capacity Ryan Field and is a member of the West Division of the Big Ten Conference. It has won two postseasons so far and has eight Conference Championships to call its own. The football team has fierce rivalries with the Illinois Fighting Illini, the Wisconsin Badgers, the Purdue Boilermakers and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

The Northwestern Wildcats football team has been bowl eligible six times in the last seven seasons. The team currently ranks at the top of the nation in terms of graduation rates amongst football teams and has won the AFCAA Academic Achievement Award four times since 2002. Some famous players the team has spawned include Napoleon Harris and Luis Castillo. Their fiercest rivalry is with the Illinois Fighting Illini, a rivalry dubbed as natural. It dates back to 1892, with an annual game held until 1927. In 2010, the annual rivalry game was resurrected, much to the joy of fans of both sides. In 2009, the two teams also began competing for the Land of Lincoln Trophy and from 1947 until 2008, they played in the Sweet Sioux Tomahawk Trophy tournament.

Fifteen Wildcats players have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, including Pat Fitzgerald, former linebacker and current coach of the team, in 2008. The team has also spawned over twenty five All–Americans with Pat Fitzgerald winning the Bednarik Award twice and the Bronko Nagurski Award twice. The team's former coach, Gary Barnett, won eight awards in 1995 alone for his coaching. Altogether, this is a team to enjoy live with some Northwestern Wildcats tickets in hand.
